Question 1

What is estimated tax?

Accepted Answer

Estimated tax is the method self-employed people, freelancers, and small business owners use to pay income tax and self-employment tax on money that has no employer withholding. Instead of tax taken out of each paycheck, you send the IRS and your state a payment four times a year on the quarterly estimated tax due dates.

Question 2

Who has to pay estimated taxes?

Accepted Answer

You generally owe quarterly estimated tax payments if you are self-employed, a freelancer, an independent contractor with 1099 income, or a small business owner, and you expect to owe $1,000 or more in tax for the year after withholding and credits.

Question 3

When are quarterly estimated tax payments due?

Accepted Answer

For most tax years the quarterly estimated tax due dates are April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 of the following year. When a date falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day.

Question 4

How much should I set aside for estimated taxes?

Accepted Answer

A common rule of thumb is 25% to 30% of net self-employment profit. A calculator is more accurate: it applies the actual self-employment tax rate (15.3% up to the Social Security wage base), federal income tax brackets, your state tax, and the qualified business income deduction to your real numbers.

Question 5

What is the self-employment tax rate?

Accepted Answer

The self-employment tax rate is 15.3%: 12.4% for Social Security up to the annual wage base and 2.9% for Medicare on all net profit. Half of the self-employment tax is deductible from income tax, and high earners may owe an additional 0.9% Medicare tax.

Question 6

How do business expenses lower my estimated tax?

Accepted Answer

Deductible business expenses reduce your net profit, and taxes are calculated on net profit rather than gross income. Every $1,000 of deductible expenses typically lowers the total estimated tax by roughly $250 to $400, depending on your federal and state rates.
